What’s in a name?

Some may be wondering what the name of our blog means.

Well it’s actually something that’s at the core of who we are and what we are wanting to do with our lives.

“Seek First” is a reference to several passages of Christian Scripture, but the main one being Matthew 6:33 (New International Version):

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

For Claire and I, we are committed to seeking first God’s kingdom – where His will rules. And trusting that He will provide us with all the other things we need physically, economically, emotionally etc.

In The Message version of the Bible it comes out a bit more like this (Matthew 6:30-33):

If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

I love the way The Message often brings a fresh look at Scripture.

So as part of seeking first God’s Kingdom, we want to work on steeping our lives and the life of our family in God-reality, God-initiatives and God-provisions.

It’s not easy, but over the years of our marriage, and before we had even met, we had both been on journey’s where we were seeking to love and serve God.

And we have both discovered in our own ways, but now increasingly in a shared way, that seeking first in this way is the only way to have a meaningful and fulfilled life that is abundant in every sense of the word.

Thanks for listening.
